Built for the Long Run

Yesterday I was out cheering at Barrelman, the last triathlon of the season in Southern Ontario. It was the A race for several of my athletes and before the race, I asked them what they wanted to do for their off season. For folks that haven't worked with a coach before, they quickly realize that off season doesn't mean taking 3 months off all training and only starting again when they have another race on the calendar. Athletes that work with me quickly come to realize that their off season is actually the most important phase of their year. It's where you mentally recharge and recover and then put all that extra time to good use by working on things that you don't have time to work on when you're actively building for a race!
This is how Built for the Long Run came to be. It's designed to help the self coached athlete make the most of their off season. What exactly is it?
A 12-week offseason experience for runners and triathletes who want to recover with purpose, build durability and prepare for what’s next.
If you tend to fade in the later stages of longer races, or injuries and niggles repeatedly disrupt your training, adding more volume isn’t necessarily the answer. You may need a stronger foundation.
Built for the Long Run is designed to help you use your offseason more purposefully. Instead of jumping straight back into structured training or losing all momentum, you’ll move through three progressive phases: Reset, Rebuild and Prepare.
Reset: Recover with Purpose
The first three weeks create space to recover from the physical and mental demands of your season. You’ll reflect on what worked, identify what held you back and determine where your attention needs to go next.
We’ll look at accumulated fatigue, sleep, stress, mobility, nutrition and any weaknesses or lingering niggles that need to be addressed before you start building again.
Rebuild: Build the Athlete
The next five weeks focus on developing the physical qualities that often get pushed aside during race-specific training.
Through a progressive strength program created for runners and triathletes, you’ll work on foundational strength, single-leg stability, mobility, core strength and the hips, glutes, calves, feet and shoulders that support durable movement. You’ll also learn how to balance strength, endurance training, recovery and nutrition without trying to do everything at once.
Because being fit is only part of the equation. You also need to be durable enough to use that fitness when fatigue sets in.
Prepare: Get Ready for What’s Next
During the final four weeks, you’ll begin transitioning from offseason foundation to purposeful preparation.
You’ll gradually reintroduce training structure and appropriate intensity, identify your priorities and build a realistic weekly rhythm around your goals and the time you actually have available.
By the end of the program, you’ll have a clearer understanding of what you need from your next season and a practical plan for moving forward.
Throughout the 12 weeks, you’ll receive a complete offseason strength program, mobility and nutrition resources, educational content, weekly coaching prompts, accountability challenges and access to an online community. The program also includes two virtual education and planning sessions and two in-person experiences focused on strength, movement, community and creating your 2027 Performance Blueprint.
The 12-Week Experience Includes:
Virtual Session: The Art of the Reset
November 3rd, 6:30 pm
We’ll look at why athletes need an offseason transition and help you identify where to focus your energy. You’ll assess areas such as fatigue, sleep, stress, nutrition, injuries and niggles, and your performance across each sport.
You’ll leave with a clearer picture of what your body needs now and how to know when you’re ready to begin rebuilding.
In Person: Move Better. Get Stronger.
November 15, 2-4 pm (Toronto)
This practical strength and mobility workshop will cover movement quality, mobility, core and single-leg stability, foundational strength, calf and foot resilience, and how to integrate strength into an endurance-training week. You’ll also receive a strength and mobility routine that you can continue using throughout the program.
Virtual Session: Train Smarter: Building Your Next Season
January 12, 6:30 pm
This session will help you make the transition from offseason training into your next structured training cycle. We’ll cover when to introduce intensity, how much training is enough, how to set priorities and how to balance endurance training, strength, recovery and fuelling around the rest of your life. You’ll also learn when to push and when it makes more sense to back off.
In Person: Run • Refuel • Plan
January 17 (Toronto) Time TBD
We’ll finish with a relaxed, community-focused group run followed by a 2027 Performance Blueprint workshop. You’ll look back at what you learned from your previous season, decide what you want from the next one and identify your biggest limiter and opportunity. From there, you’ll establish your strength, nutrition and recovery priorities and outline the first steps of your next training block.
